Join the writing community of the Mechanics’ Institute at this spirited event where eight Institute authors present their new work and discuss the growth experienced along their writer’s journey. Learn valuable lessons about editing, choosing a book cover image, how to complete a draft while having a life, and how to really read a poem. If you are interested in the independent/self publishing process or just want to learn from others experience this is the event for you!

Join us for an amazing convention experience on board the USS Hornet Museum! Badges are limited so purchase early to guarantee admission!

 

MuseumYour badge includes admission to Kraken Con and the rest of the Hornet Museum – including the largest Apollo Space exhibit on the West Coast, a number of aircrafts (jets, propellor and helicopters!), and of course the Hornet herself! Learn more about the ship and her history by taking a docent-led tour (time and location TBA). For a thrilling adventure stop by the flight simulator for a 5 minute ride similar to Star Tours at Disneyland (tentative hours 12PM-3PM)! All this and more is included FREE with your Kraken Con admission!

The ConventionKraken Con exclusive areas of the ship are Hangar Bay 3, a portion of the Flight Deck, the CPO Mess and the Fantail. Vendors, artists and our theater are located in the Hangar Bay while the CPO Mess is a short distance away and our panel room. The Flight Deck contains our Main Events stage and photo studio. Finally, be sure to visit the Fantail to play a special Kantai Collection-themed puzzle game in the vein of the popular Room Escape Games! As always our trading card game cards can be found in various locations and our scavenger hunt will be returning as well!

Policies

At the request of Board of Trustees of the USS Hornet Museum, out of respect to the men and women who served on board the USS Hornet, and due to concerns about safety while on board there will be additional rules regarding our cosplay/dress code policy. We know our attendees have been respectful but we need to stress the importance of the following rules which will be enforced before entrance to the event is granted. USS Hornet staff will have the final word regarding any rules enforcement.

DRESS CODE

1. All functioning bags (regardless if part of a cosplay or not) must meet bag size restrictions of 12”x8”x12”. A bag check area will be provided outside of the USS Hornet Museum for Kraken Con attendees.

2. All props must be under 6’4” in height and 48” in width. Non-functioning bags (cannot be opened or used to store items) are considered props and must meet these requirements as well. Exceptions may be made for modular props which can be taken apart and put back together.

3. Shoes must be worn at all times. Comfortable shoes are recommended as staircases can be steep and the ship is large, requiring a lot of walking.

4. Undergarments of any kind (bras, panties, boxers, etc) should not be visible.

5. Skirts/shorts should completely cover the derriere.

6. Tops should not be so low cut as to reveal undergarments or excessive décolletage.

7. Bare midriff is allowed as long as the rest of the outfit conforms to all other listed requirements.

8. Topless or open shirt cosplay is not permissible.

9. Cosplay involving one-piece Japanese bathing suits (Sukumizu) may be worn under other clothing and revealed for photos only within Kraken Con badged enforced areas.

10. While military uniforms and costumes inspired by the military – both the US and abroad – are welcomed, please refrain from wearing swastikas or other Nazi party regalia.

RESTRICTED ITEMS

1. Functional weapons are not allowed. Weapon props created out of plastic, cardboard, foam or other such materials are permissible provided they are not too realistic in appearance. Airsoft guns (even if non functional), replica guns, swords with metal and other weapons that have metal components are not allowed. Please note all props must conform to the aforementioned height/width dimensions.

2. Markers and painting materials are strictly prohibited. Vandalism or defacement of any nature is subject to prosecution.

MINORS

Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Children 6 and under do not need to purchase admission but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

General Information

ACCESSIBILITY

Due to the historic nature of the ship, wheelchair and stroller accessibility is extremely limited. To enter the ship you must be able to walk up a flight of stairs. Most doorways have thresholds and to visit various areas (CPO Mess and Flight Deck) steep ladders or stairs must be traversed.

ATMS

There are no ATMS located on or near the ship.

FOOD & DRINK

There are vending machines on board the ship as well as concession stand(s)/food trucks outside.

PARKING

There is plenty of free parking located across from the pier.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

The nearest BART station is located at 12th Street, Oakland City Center. We will be providing a courtesy shuttle from the BART station to the USS Hornet.

TICKETING FAQ

There are no refunds or exchanges for Kraken Con tickets purchased online. All sales are final.

Is what I purchased on Eventbrite my ticket? All tickets are e-tickets – you will exchange this ticket for a badge/wristband at Registration, located on the dock outside of the Hornet. You should receive your ticket as well as confirmation via the email address you input during the checkout process. Be sure to check your junk/spam folder if you do not receive an email from Eventbrite after purchase. Contact us at info@krakencon.com if you need further assistance.

Do I need to print out my ticket(s)? Yes, please print your ticket(s) to expedite the registration process.

What if I purchased multiple tickets and they all have my name? This is not a problem – tickets are transferrable. Just be sure that everyone in your party has their own printed out ticket. You can also update the name on your ticket(s) through Eventbrite here.

Enjoy the perfect fall day with garden tours, exceptional wine and food pairings, dynamic wine and garden seminars, and this year Grammy nominated Andre Thierry brings his Alternative Creole sounds for all to enjoy!
Don’t miss the Chef’s Challenge featuring some of your favorite Celebrity Chefs in live cooking competitions. Around the rest of the festival, nearly 50 wine country and Bay Area chefs will create tomato-inspired bites, vying for the coveted Critic’s Choice award.

This festival benefits the Ceres Community Project.Ceres Community Project builds healthy and caring communities by engaging teens as gardeners and chefs and nurturing their leadership skills and commitment to healthy eating. In 2015, Ceres’ volunteer chefs will prepare 93,000 free and low-cost healthy meals for hundreds of Sonoma and Marin county families facing a health crisis such as cancer.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

Anyone wishing to taste wine must be prepared to provide identification at Check-in.

What can/can’t I bring to the event?

Due to Health Code restrictions, only service animals are allowed.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Each person must have a printed ticket for admission to the event. Tickets will be scanned at Check-in areas.

Will there be photography or videography taking place at the Festival?

Photos or videography taken at the event may be used in future promotional material for Kendall-Jackson or Ceres Community Project.

Ticket information:

All general admission tickets check-in at the main festival check-in.  General Admission guests will receive a wristband, event glass, wine tasting tickets and an event program.  Once inside the event, all food sampling is included and additional wine tasting tickets can be purchased.

Wine Club Members who purchase this ticket have a special check-in station at the general admission check-in area.  They will also have access to a special Wine Club Member tent which is hosted by our Wine Club and Direct Sales team and includes special wines and samples of various food vendor tomato creations.

Premier Access ticket holders can drive up to the front of the Wine Estate & Gardens for valet parking and their check-in is located at the main building entrance. Premier Access ticket holders receive a wristband, a special Premier Access Badge, event glass – no wine tasting ticket required. Once inside the event, all food sampling and wine tasting is included. A special Premier tent within our 3 acre garden is available for Premier Access ticket holders, which includes additional food stations and creations. Premier Access ticket holders have access to their very own Master Sommelier pouring our limited release wines paired perfectly with small bites. Premier Access ticket holders can lounge in the Premier tent or enjoy a stroll through the rest of the Festival.

Celebrating the sun, sand and surf that defines life along the coast and celebrates the community. This year, Fog Fest celebrates a 30- year anniversary! Festivities will include 3 stages of live music; over 200 arts and craft booths; a Saturday morning parade; live painting of surfboards; a Sunday afternoon Family Fun Fest, a Sunday morning Fog Jog & Stride, all weekend Kids Amusement Area – Classic Amusements, professional sand sculptor Bill Lewis of Santa Cruz Sant creating a sand sculpture magic; lots of great food & drink, including our signature cocktail, “The Fog Cutter,” made & approved by Sammy Hagar’s Beach Bar Rum. Special this year is an exhibit of all 30 Fog Fest posters, at the newly remodeled and historic Pacifica Coastside Museum located at 1850 Francisco Blvd. At the end of the day walk 1 block to the beach and end your festival day with a beautiful sunset, yes sunset; what fog?

Special Edition Fog Fest wines in Chardonnay or a Cabernet Sauvignon are availabe and generously brought to us by Oceana Market where wines can be purchased. Oceana Market is located at 200 Eureka Sq off of Oceana Blvd. All proceeds go to our over 45 local organizations that also benefit from Fog Fest proceeds.

ADDED! –  A special 6,000 sq ft exhibit brought to us by the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee called, “The 50 Tour.” Champions of the Bay Presented by Chevron’ Featuring the 8 Bay Area Lombardi Trophies won by the Oakland Raiders & SF 49ers. JUST ANNOUNCED: Special Guest former SF 49er defensive tackle, Dana Stubblefield!! Saturday only, get there early. We’ll have him for 2 hours!

Fog Fest proceeds benefit over 45 local community organizations that partner with them over the 2-day weekend. In addition, Fog Fest strives towards being a green event working with Recology of the Coast to recycle debris. Free bicycle parking is offered by Gear Head Bikes. Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

ID’s are required for alcohol purchases

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

Samtrans, the Peninsula’s transit system and within Pacifica, the Devil’s Slide Ride free weekend shuttle. There will be 2 free shuttles, running every 1/2 hr from the southern end of Pacifica at the Linda Mar Park & Ride, beginning at 8am,then routes north to the festival grounds, making stops along the way. Plan accordingly as the shuttles last pick up from the festival grounds is 5:45pm routing south back to Linda Mar. Paid parking available at the north and south ends of the festival.

Surrounding street parking on Francisco & Oceana Blvds and surrounding neighborhood streets. Free bicycle parking at the south end of Palmetto Ave at Montecito in front of the old city utility plant, on the west side of the street.

There will also be a free shutle running from Skyline College from lot G, however all vehicles must park at lots L,N,O & P and walk to lot G. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes with the last pickup leaving the festival grounds at 6:20pm. Please plan accordingly.

What can/can’t I bring to the event?

No skateboards, bicycles or pets on the busy festival grounds.

In addition to complimentary classic picnic amenities including bocce ball, Off the Grid: Picnic @ the Presidio offers yoga classes from “The Pad” and kids yoga from “It’s Yoga Kids”, as well as game rentals and activities from Sports Basement. Blankets and Adirondack chairs are available to rent for a complete Picnic experience.

Off the Grid is proud to partner with the Presidio Trust. In addition to Off the Grid: Picnic at the Presidio, patrons are invited to enjoy the many activities within the Presidio, including 24 miles of hiking trails, eight scenic overlooks, sculptures by Andy Goldsworthy, the Walt Disney Family Museum, the Officer’s Club and Heritage Center, and neighboring restaurants The Commissary and Arguello.
