A Different Sort of Repeating

Allison Smith is a visual artist who engages with objects and themes from throughout American history—Civil War reenactments, quilting, and colonial furniture have all played a role in recent projects. Her works layer historical and contemporary elements of craft, activism, and social practice to investigate American identity and patriotism. Smith has produced over twenty-five solo exhibitions, installations, performances, and artist-led participatory projects for venues such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Public Art Fund, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, among many others. She has exhibited her work in group exhibitions at galleries and museums including P.S.1/MoMA, Palais de Tokyo, the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, MASS MoCA, and The Tang Museum. Her work is held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Saatchi Gallery London, Linda Pace Foundation, and many other public and private collections worldwide.

layover-streetSpontaneous Storytelling and Free Drinks Night

The Layover, Oakland

6:30 PM,  Ages: 21+

Free

Finally, a storytelling event where the point is to meet each other. At this brand-new, participatory event, you’ll have a chance to get to know each other as well as listen to real-life stories without notes or scripts. Tell your friends, bring a girlfriend or a wingman, and come on down to The Layover for Spontaneous Storytelling from 6:30-8:30 pm on the 2nd Saturday of the month.

An optional icebreaker game will seduce you into talking and mingling with the other people here. Then, you can put your name in the hat for a chance to tell your story on the theme. It’s called Spontaneous Storytelling because you don’t know the theme until the last minute. Or just hang out and listen. It’s a fun, casual alternative to the bar scene.

Win a drink ticket if you get up to tell a story. And everyone who participates in the pre-show game gets entered in the raffle to win a gift certificate for food & drink at a popular Oakland beer garden. It’s a win-win situation.
